The Value of Open-Mindedness and Intellectual Humility for Interdisciplinary Research

Academic research is increasingly centering on interdisciplinary work. Strong (SIR), involving researchers from very different fields, such as scientists and humanists, often encouraged, if not required, by funding agencies. I argue that two intellectual virtues, open-mindedness humility, are crucial for overcoming obstacles to SIR achieving success. In part I, provide a primer virtue the virtues in question. II, distinguish weak (WIR), which involves teams neighboring physics chemistry, disciplinary (DR), same discipline. also outline what counts success SIR, explain why it’s more challenging attain than WIR DR. III, how both essential can arise its pursuit.
